이베리아반도 북서부에서 브리튼 제도에 이르는 대서양 연안 지역에서 발견되는 다년생 구근 식물로, 정원 식물로도 자주 재배됩니다. 영어로는 커먼 블루벨(common bluebell) 또는 단순히 블루벨(bluebell)이라고 불립니다. 영국 품종인 Hyacinthoides non-scripta는 스페인 품종인 Hyacinthoides hispanica와 구별되는데, 스페인 품종은 향이 거의 없고 더 튼튼하여 자생종보다 우세하게 번식하며 교잡종을 형성하기도 합니다. 스코틀랜드에서 블루벨은 때때로 스코티시 블루벨(scottish bluebell)이라 불리는 Campanula rotundifolia를 지칭하기도 합니다.
